You got through the week, you badass you

You did it. You made it through the week. Step right up and let me introduce you the holy grail of the calendar: Friday.

You should celebrate this. You should celebrate every deadline you hit, every time you fired off answers when your boss barraged you with questions, and every time you worked out—even when you were tired, hungry, and just wanted to drown your sorrows in a bottle of wine.

You deserve a knock-the-wind-out-of-you pat on the back for getting through these past four days. And you know who’s going to give you said pat-on-the-back? You. It’s not going to be your older brother, boss, or best friend. They have their own weeks to deal with. This celebration is on you.

This should be a big deal.

It should be a big deal that you got your ass up every single morning, showered even though you showered the night before, wore matching socks for once, and marched into work. It should be a big deal that you put forth full-effort on the projects you’re working on, kept your cool even when your computer froze for the umpteenth time, and went to the gym the moment you got off work. Yes, I know I talked about working out already. But that’s because it’s a big deal.

Giving your best, taking care of yourself, and complimenting yourself once in a century are important. Yet we don’t treat them that way. We tell ourselves we must push ourselves to the brink of exhaustion, and only come up for air when our faces are plastered across Forbes.

Fuck that.

You should celebrate yourself.

My friend Keena is the #1 person I look to for how to celebrate small victories. Back when I first met her, I loved going to her apartment because she always had fresh cut flowers sitting on her dining room table. Flowers are my second favorite thing in this world (dogs are the first), so I always commented on her never-ending supply of bouquets. She finally told me, “I buy flowers on my way home from work every Friday. It’s just my way of saying, ‘Way to go Keena, way to get through the week.’”

Ladies and gentlemen, that’s how it’s done.

I do not care how many times you fucked up this week. I do not care how many negativities ran through your head, how many swear words you muttered under your breath, or how many times you questioned whether you are fulfilling your life’s greater purpose. You made it through. And that is all you can ask of yourself.

You handled this week like a boss. No matter what shit came your way, you handled it. And that is awesome.

Welcome to Friday everyone. You deserve it.
